Ebb & Flow
Designer : Mark Gabbertas
Ebb & Flow have been designed to work together, but also to work individually.
Flow is a sofa system that is a deliberate departure from the low backed sofa whose form has dominated seating design for some time. The high back serves to support the head and allow the sitter to relax when leaning back, whilst still in a relatively formal seating position. The high back, abstractedly referencing a wing chair, also helps to create a sense of privacy and intimacy for the users, and can be used to delineate areas within a larger space.
The system comprises 4 units which can combine with each other to give maximum flexibility of configuration. The 1200mm long unit could be described as a large chair or a compact sofa. The 1800mm similarly a comfortable two seater sofa or compact three seater. Two wedge shaped segments, convex and concave, allow for flowing and gently shaped seating plans to be created.
Ultimately, there will be tables which can be attached to the sofa providing each seated person with an individual tablet for coffee or a laptop.
The aesthetic of the design owes much to the cold cure foam manufacturing process that allows for an ambitious form, including perfect radii, accurate angles and the considered transition between the two. The front and top facets are achievable using this method, in combination with the precision upholstering and pattern making. These two faces are a deliberate contrast to the gentle shape of the other elements of the sofa.
The ebb stool and bench units take the idea of a facet and instead of using these on a front face, use them at either end. These units come in 600, 1200 and 1800 lengths and can also incorporate power modules. The idea of flexibility is reinforced by these being able to be put on castors.
